Mudumalai

Mudumalai : -

Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary was the first sanctuary in south India. The land is extremely varied with hills, valleys, narrow valleys, waterways and swamps. It includes of tropical moist deciduous forests, dry deciduous forests and scrub forests. Compared to the nearby reserves, the climate is warmer in Mudumalai.

The Famous Mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary is situated at an elevation of 1000 mts and extends over an area of 321 sq km. Mudumalai sanctuary lies between Kerala and Karnataka states. Mudumalai is located in the thick forests of the northern Nilgiri Hills where the fantastic screenshot of the Western ghats meet the Eastern ghats, in Tamil Nadu, India.

The range of Mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary is the same as in Bandipur (another famous sanctuary near it) but the Mudumalai has two features which makes different from its neighbors - the Moyar River and closeness to the Nilgiri mountain ranges which has variety of wildlife.

The Mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary has varied mixture of flat land, rising and falling parkland, open grassland, swamp, valleys and nullas. The Mayyar River in this area shapes a sequence of spectacular view on its way from Udhagamandalam - Mysore highway. Mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary could be reached from Mysore as well.

Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary also includes a National Park measuring are of 103 sq kms. Evergreen forests, grasslands and a wide variety of wildlife are the main characteristics of this park.

The fauna include Indian Elephants, Gaur, Banner, Macaque, Common Langur, Tigers, Leopards, Chital, Panthers, Sloth Bear, Python, Barking Deer, Four Horned Antelope, Otter, Crocodiles (Mugger), Giant Flying Squirrel, Sambar, Hyena, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer, Jackal, Hare, Porcupine and Mongoose are part of the wildlife in Mudumalai. The sanctuary is also with plenty of civets, antelopes, languor and macaques.

The main attraction in Mudumalai is Mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary. The Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary was set up in 1932, established in 1940 as a sanctuary. Since then has emerged as an important wildlife conservation park of India.

Activities:

Jungle Safari:

You can enjoy jungle safari on the vehicles or elephants of the Forest Department. While on your way you can notice group of elephants and spotted dear, the sambar that pricks its ears, langurs jumping from one tree to another and many other glamorous varieties of birds. You can also enjoy elephant ride to even explore the area inaccessible by vehicles.

Best Time to Visit Mudumalai is from February to June and October to December.

Morning 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM
Evening 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM

Rs. 35 per head for half hour round trip in a 25 seater van

Elephant Safari

It is a 10 minute elephant joy ride in Bandipur Rs. 50 per person. In Mudumalai, half hour elephant safari is about to be started with bookings to be done at the Ooty forest office
